  • Caroline McKnight was born in 1928 to Violet and Wayne Button, growing up during the Great Depression, the middle of five children. She is survived by her youngest sister, Dollie; her children, Susan, Karen and David; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She wrote of her “adventures” with her family as a seven-year-old girl on her first vacation away from home in “Cabin by the River,” which she published in 2000. She spent her childhood as she liked to say in “a house full of buttons” in Kansas City, Missouri, where she attended the Kansas City Art Institute and School of Design. Moving West, she married William McKnight in a radio-broadcast ceremony in Los Angeles on what was a prototypical “reality show” of the day. The ceremony was pressed to 78 rpm records for posterity, though the marriage did not last. Her early career included a stint at Rose Marie Reid, a leading swimwear designer in the 1950s.

After starting her family, she attended California State University at Long Beach, and earned her high school teaching credential. She taught English, Creative Writing, Public Speaking and Art over a span of 30 years at high schools in Orange County, California. She was passionate about making a difference in the lives of her students, and in encouraging their creativity through art, theater and writing.

While always demonstrating a zest for life and adventure, which included experiences from road trips to white water rafting, the past three years saw a serious decline in Caroline’s health. On that final ride home at the very end of her story, “Cabin by the River”, she wrote, “…and as she pulled smoothly away and turned left, we heard no more rock pings and knew that the ruts were behind us.” Caroline took her final ride home to be with the Lord on November 12, 2009, and the ruts of life are behind her.
